What is Fat Tire Biking?
Fat tire biking is a way for experienced mountain bikers to enjoy the sport in winter conditions, on the snow. Fat tire bikes provide improved grip and traction by adding extra contact surface. However, biking on snow is no easy feat and one should expect considerably less traction than an average mountain bike ride. Guests should expect a ride that on average is more strenuous due to conditions and additional weight of the bike.
Before Your Trip
Prior to your trip the most important thing we need from you is everyone’s height. We will also need a liability waiver, which you will find attached to your reservation under the blue “View Required Documents” button. Otherwise, we simply need to know what pace you’d like to bike at.
FAQs
What is Included?
We will provide the fat tire bikes, guide, and helmets. When your guide picks you up they will have water, and some light snacks like granola bars.
What Do I Wear?
Dress in layers, you will be outside exposed to the elements. Long tight pants, a base layer shirt, mid layer jacket, thin gloves, and sunglasses are recommended. Please keep in mind you will warm up as you bike, and you do not want your sweat to freeze. Be bold and start cold! You may bring a backpack to put layers into as you warm up.
What Should I Bring?
Extra layers are never a bad idea to bring along, and you can leave them in the vehicle if needed. Your guide will have a backpack for your water and may have extra room for a layer or two as well. If you’d like any snacks or treats besides granola bars you are more than welcome to bring that as well.
I’ve Never Mountain Biked Before Will I Enjoy Fat Tire Biking?
Due to the additional learning curve fat tire biking has with it’s additional weight and less traction, we do only recommend this activity for those in decent physical shape who do feel comfortable on the bike. We want to ensure that those who sign up for this activity will have a good time and not spend the entire time struggling to pedal on a slippery surface. This experience can come from road biking, or we’ve seen athletic individuals from a different sport have a great time as well! If you have any questions about whether or not this activity would be a good fit for you, feel free to give our office a call.
