The snow and the cold have arrived! This last storm brought us the snow we needed to start our dog sledding tours in Weber Canyon (about 45 minutes from Park City) and enough to pack a good base trail at Big Canyon Ranch. After a long summer the pups are ready to start running and earn all that dog food they have been munching on during the off season. Our dog sledding tours are a little different than what you might find elsewhere. Each musher that runs for us got into dog sledding because of a love of the dogs and a passion for the sport.
Our mushers participate in dogsled races, fundraisers, and even founded arctic breeds rescue. Providing tours for guests in Park City serves a number of purposes. First these dogs need exercise and a lot of it. Being bred to run means that to keep these dog happy and healthy they need to cover some miles. Second, any dog owner can tell you that just one or two pet dogs can eat about twice their weight in food each month. Because of the calories they burn running they need the highest quality food and they eat way more of it than your average dog. Finally, our mushers want to share the joy they get out spending their lives with these wonderful creatures.
To the mushers the dogs are not pets, but family. Like a lot of hyperactive furry kids with their own personalities and quirks. Some dogs are from responsible breeders in the area, often running on the same team as a brother or sister, while others are rescues that get a new home and family. All of the dogs are friendly and social, and need a lot of love (and treats) after the rides. We are sure to have weight limits and rest days to ensure the safety and well being of the pups.
Please come on out and let the mushers and dogs show you what this dog sledding thing is all about!
