Winter is slowly but surely arriving in Park City! The current early season snow conditions make it difficult to get into any of our other winter activities other than snowshoeing at higher elevations, however fly fishing is an adventure we can take you on in nearly any weather!
Why fly fish in winter?
With winter bringing colder temperatures, fishing spots get less crowded! This offers you a more serene and peaceful experience and allows the fish populations a break from the high stress of plentiful summer anglers. As hatches have slowed down for the season, trout will focus on midges for most of the winter, and BWO mayflies come February and March. Our experienced guides will provide you with their knowledge and expertise to give you the best chance they can!
Who should book this trip?
This is a great option to get outside for anglers of any level! No prior experience is necessary to fly fish with us, just a willingness to get outside and enjoy the winter weather with us. Keep in mind there will likely be some walking with a possibility of post holing through snow to get from the parking area to where you will end up fishing, and that river walking involves uneven surfaces and can be challenging for some. The minimum age for this trip is 12 years old.
How to stay comfortable?
As with any outdoor winter activity, layering properly is the key to staying as comfortable as possible during your trip. We recommend wearing clothing you might ordinarily wear to go skiing in- synthetic or wool layers with water/windproof layers on top. We also provide waders and boots to keep you dry; but be prepared to wade and do some walking (possibly post holing in snow) in order to get to the location you will actually be fishing at. Once there, you’ll be standing in cold water as well- thick socks go a long way!
What is included?
We outfit you with all the gear necessary for fly fishing- waders, boots, fishing equipment, beverages and snacks. You are responsible for appropriate clothing for the weather. Your guide will provide you with the best flies for the conditions present at the time of your trip. If you are staying in the Park City area, we include complimentary round trip transportation from your hotel or Airbnb.
How long will we be out for?
In winter, we only run our half-day fly fishing trips. These ordinarily run for around 5 hours door-to-door, with around 4 hours spent on the river. Trips can be cut short by request, however we do not recommend shortening trips by more than an hour, you will be having too much fun and won’t want to leave.
Where are we going?
Based on what has been fishing well for them recently, your guide will choose the exact location of your fishing trip. We operate on the Provo and Weber rivers, and mainly fish the middle Provo in the winter. Expect around a 20-30 minute drive from Park City to your fishing location.
We think winter fly fishing is a fantastic way to get outside, and experience winter in a new way. We would love to get out on the river with you! Give us a call with any questions you have, and don’t hesitate to get in on this unforgettable winter adventure.
